Joystick mapping

Is there a tutorial somewhere that shows how to map the joystick, or sliders for that matter? I love that drag and drop setup of this app, but I've been at a standstill on a project for a while. 
We are working on a "robot", but similar projects using shields have output to each motor. However, we're using a sabertooth motor driver that uses one data pin to control both motors, and we're having a heck of a time modifying, or integrating code, or even so much as getting serial data to map the joystick.
Any advice on this.

I'm also hoping to use this app with neopixel, or fastled to make a simple on off switch to control my shelf lights and patterns. So far I haven't had luck integrating with neopixel.
